There’s something of a return to the old school in the summer plans at The Rainbow. Back in 2006 the now famed Rainbow Courtyard had palm trees, benches, the smell of an organic BBQ, open air and exposed brickwork with subtle graffiti. Sadly 2010 saw the fun police slap a Noise Abatement order on the place which was the end of the space as it was then known.

Now though, things are returning to how they once were – the natural light is coming back, as are the exposed walls, BBQ, palm tree’s and old wooden benches. To celebrate this there will be four very special events from the June 9th with a Souvenier and VIVa Showcase through to a Fuse special on July 14th, Leftroom v Culprit showcase on August 11th and last but not least – a 5 hour Kerri Chandler set on Saturday 8th September

Hideout Festival Announces 2012 Pool Parties and Arena Breakdowns

After a prompt sell-out last month, Hideout Festival has yet another treat in store for ticket holders with today’s release of the much-anticipated Pool Parties and full set of Hideout Daytime activities. As well as this, attendees now have access to the arena breakdowns for each night of the main event, which takes place from 29th June – 1st July.

Hideout Pool Parties

Hideout Pool Parties are completely free admission for all festival ticket holders and will take place from the Thursday through to the Sunday of the event, hosted by a selection of the festival’s club partners and some of the dance scene’s finest record labels.

Drop the Mustard bring bass in the form of DJ Zinc and chart topper Redlight on the Friday of the event over at the Aquarius pool, while FACE join up with One Records to present Subb-an & Adam Shelton along with Simon Baker, Scott Bleepz & Elliot Croft in Papaya.

The hugely anticipated Hot Creations pool party is set to take place on the Saturday and features a stunning line-up headed up by DJ of the moment Jamie Jones, as well as label mates Robert James and Richy Ahmed. The very same day, Bigger than Barry & Dub Boro will be bringing the daily slice of bass to proceedings with the likes of Breakage and Toddla T.

For Sunday’s finalé, pool party attendees will be treated to sets from Hideout shining stars Seth Troxler and Nina Kraviz over at Papaya’s Mulletover hosted party.

Sunday will also see sets from Radio 1’s Mistajam as well as dubstep DJ and producer Artwork, over at the Aquarius pool and headed up by Edinburgh’s Xplicit.

All the pool parties will take place between 2pm and 8pm each day at Papaya and Aquarius on Zrce Beach.

Local club partners join Hideout Daytime programme

Hideout Festival is this year welcoming a selection of ex-Yu club partners into its substantial programme. Descending from some of the region’s most vibrant cities and lucrative nightclubs, they will be hosting their own Hideout Daytime line-ups at Kalypso, infusing some local sounds into the mix.

Kalyspo will host the likes of CFSN, Black Light and UES from Zagreb, Rijeka’s Balkan Kolektiv and Balance FM, LoopJunkies and Acilectro from Split, along with UK Train and Big Mama Session from Osijek, all in Croatia. From further afield RMNG will be welcomed from Serbia, Krunch It! and K4 from Slovenia, plus Kontra DJs and French Kiss FM from Bosnia and Herzegovina and many more.

Ex-Yu club partner sets will take place between 2pm and 8pm each day at Kalpyso, kicking off on the Thursday before the main event.

Arena Breakdowns Revealed

The arena breakdowns for each night of the festival have also been revealed. The first night of the main festival will see Chase & Status and Sub Focus headlining Papaya, while Four Tet & Caribou showcase their B2B DJ set over in Aquarius 1.

Loco Dice and Jamie Jones are set to headline Papaya the following night, alongside the likes of lady of the moment Maya Jane Coles. Annie Mac will headline Aquarius 1 the same night, while Andy C and Shy FX will bring the sounds of bass to Aquarius 2.

Two of the festival’s most anticipated acts Ricardo Villalobos and Seth Troxler will take to the decks on the Papaya main stage for the event’s finale, while the likes of dance music heavyweight’s Skream, Ben Klock and SBTRKT close the event across the other three arenas.

Tickets for Hideout 2012 have now sold out and the substantial programme of events is set to exceed ticket holder’s expectations. The full list of pool parties and arena breakdowns can be found on the Hideout Festival website or via their social media pages.

SHADOW CITY
facebook.com/shadow.city

At Shadow City the emphasis is on pushing forward thinking music and doing something a bit different while retaining an element of fun so as not to bore the shit out of you. Music savvy without being snobby and not bound by any genres, the crew book DJs from the UK and beyond who supply fresh sounds and party vibes alike. Past guests include Deadboy/Burial/Jamie XX/Boddika/Lunice/Redlight/Untold/Mista Men/Blawan/Doc Daneeka/Joy O/Submerse/James Blake/Funkystepz/George Fitzgerald and many more.

ZED BIAS
facebook.com/zedbiasakamaddslinky

One of the pioneers of breakbeat garage, Dave Jones’ pseudonyms include Zed Bias, Phuturistix, Henchmen, Daluq, Talissman, Ruffcut Bias, Nu Design, 7 Wonders, Dekata Project, Strontium Dog – just some of the names Maddslinky, aka Dave Jones, has recorded under in the last ten years as himself or in collaboration with others. With a slew of seminal releases in 1999 on his own Sidewinder and Sidestepper imprints, Jones then hit the UK Charts as Zed Bias in 2000 with Neighbourhood, now widely regarded as one of the all time classic UK Garage tracks. So much so that with the recent resurgence in the 2-Step sound in the UK club scene it was re-released last year with a remix from Roska that fully redefined its importance to a younger generation of clubbers.

Mooch through these 3 musical delights spanning both recent times and a little older. Enjoy!

Ahead of our next event with Simian Mobile Disco and Guti this weekend, we take a look at the latter. Get your tickets here and get full event details over on Facebook.

“Drawing up his own way” is the philosophy of DJ, producer and Argentinian Guti. He shone in the world of Jazz at early age and is a sensitive and intense pianist with his own language. In years gone by he has played in some of the biggest stadiums and won gold records in South America in the last decade as a rock musician. In 2006, though, life took him to a new path: techno music.

Now a stalwart on labels like Desolat and Crosstown Rebels, Guti takes the live element of electronic music to the next level.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Never one to be outspoken, Guti also loves to give good feedback and chat about life an his amazing talents.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Artists like Carl Cox, Ricardo Villalobos, Stacey Pullen, Loco Dice, Luciano, Marco Carola, Nic Fanciulli among other international artists are playing his soulful songs all around the planet, so it’s only fitting that FACE bring the Argentinean to the forefront and imitate surroundings of The Cellar.

Ahead of them playing at FACE this weekend, we catch up with fast rising Manchester duo H2. H2 aka Tez Perez and Danny Hevingham are a fast rising production and live performance duo from Manchester. As well as regularly rocking clubs like Sankeys – where they were former residents – and the Limba night at Joshua Brooks, they have produced some mega dancefloor bombs for the likes of Get Physical, Cecile and recently remixed german tech house specialists Piemont on their Sutreflex label…

Before you read the interview, though, download a new mix from the duo here – sendspace

H2 Fanpage

How did you guys meet and what draws you to each other?

We met up back in 2003 at a house party. It turned out at the time Danny was selling his old belt drive decks to upgrade to some Technics so i bought them off him. We got talking and from that day started going out in the same group of friends. Within 3 months we were djinn together in small bars and the old Sankeys upstairs.

Do you have set roles in the booth and in the studio?

Not really no. 2 tracks on, 2 off is generally the way we set up in the booth with both of us occasionally having a mess around with the effects. Whether it be Traktor, live or dj set, we tend to share our responsibilities when playing. In the studio we both love having hands on. Sometimes we both work away individually on a project then come together at the end to make some tweaks and changes. 2 heads are always better than 1.

How important has Manchester been on fomenting your sound?

I think it’s important to crack any local area wherever it is you’re from. We are quite fortunate to be living in a city like Manchester with some amazing clubs (Sankeys, WHP, Joshua Brooks etc). It’s definitely helped our education, having the opportunity to see and play with some of the very best artists from around the world.

What sort of scenes and sounds first got you into electronic music?

I think we’re both similar with our tastes in music before we met. I used to love going to some of the smaller underground venues in town playing house. My love for house probably stemmed from a little bit of late 90′s trance. Danny was lucky enough to make it to the Hacienda in his early clubbing days & was inspired from there into what we do now.

Are your influences the same now or…?

I think every dj progresses their own sound and taste in music. We struggled when we first started cause everything was house & funk in Manchester. We’ve always liked to play a little bit tougher so we went through a phase playing a lot more electronic and some techno too when we first became Sankeys residents. Our taste has mellowed a lot since then. We love all sub genre’s of house except the banging shit at 140bpm

How did you hook up with Get Physical and Cecille?

Sending out promos. Our manager managed to get some bits in the hands of Marc & Nick Curly (cecille) and within a few days they were intouch for more. Before we knew it they wanted 8 tracks. That kinda helped with Get Physical. Having a name like Cecille on your cv goes along way

I understand you run your own night, Limbo – tell us about that…

We started Limbo back in October 2010. It’s gone so quick. We run it monthly at a small venue in Manchester called Joshua Brooks. It’s one of the most successful nights & venues in Manchester now. We book some great artists including Seuil, Yakine, Butch, Maxxi Soundsystem, Huxley, Anthea & Celler, Carlo Lio, Geddes, Ethyl, M’In, Leon. Our next event is with Jesse Perez [Hot Creations] on May 26th

What else you got coming up?

So much stuff in the studio at the minute. Working on a track as part of the “5 years of Cecille” release, remixes for Nick Curly, Piemont & more stuff for Get Physical. We’ve got a Cecille showcase coming up at Sankeys & we’re heading out to Sonar aswell. Inbetween all that we’re taking a couple of weeks off holiday straight after the gig at FACE

What should people expect at FACE this weekend?

We’re gonna be showcasing off some our very new material. One of 2 of the tracks on the Cecille & Get Physical EP’s might make their way on there aswell. We find it very important to always be working on new stuff & it’s a great opportunity to test your material in live sets. Fingers crossed it works for everyone

What do you like to do outside of music?

We try get to the gym when we can & Danny is spending most of his time at the minute working on his new home. We are spending so much time on our music at the minute though to be honest, as boring as it sounds. The next 6 months are huge for us.

As you know we like to mix it up here at FACE and cater for everyone in the coolest way possible, mainly because we’re all about different vibes ourselves although we are primarily seen as a House Music night. Anyway, after the success of our first show featuring our friends “Peace’ (who are now currently touring with some band called the ‘Manic Street Preachers’), we return this weekend with our next instalment of the hugely popular FACE Live.

This time it’s in collaboration with VICE magazines touring club brand Noisey Nights and the event will be headlined by Birmingham locals – Troumaca and Manchester’s deep house duo – H2. FACE Live happens sporadically, we’ll always surprise them on you and along with it comes an earlier start time of 8pm too. So get down here from the start, drink & mingle with your friends and enjoy some quality live music in the courtyard prior to the following club night vibe. Our resident dj’s and friends – This Is Tomorrow will also be on hand before, during & afterwards to keep you buzzing all night long. It’ll be the shit! so dont miss it. Troumaca will be playing a pre-club night set around 10pm whilst H2 will be playing around 1.30am. Mooch their video’s please…

Click here to view the embedded video.

Troumaca

Troumaca are a fast rising five piece outfit from Birmingham via St. Vincent & The Grenadines. The group have seen plenty of praise from the likes of NME flood in recently, with their first release, The Gems EP, winning just as much praise from fans. They have been championed on Radio 1 by the likes of Huw Stephens and Zane Lowe and are currently playing all over the UK with plenty of European festival dates lined-up. Why? Well, the group melt dub with indie and tropical beats and bass with strong lyrics. The percussive is live and alive and helps propel each track along with plenty of exoticism not normally associated with dancing music.

Dont believe us? Well check it for yourself at troumaca.co.uk for free downloads and more.

H2

Meanwhile, H2 aka Tez Perez and Danny Hevingham are a fast rising production and live performance duo from Manchester. As well as regularly rocking clubs like Sankeys – where they were former residents – and the Limba night at Joshua Brooks, they have produced some mega dancefloor bombs for the likes of Get Physical, Cecile and recently remixed german tech house specialists Piemont on their Sutreflex label as well as Popof and more on Sven Väth’s Cocoon imprint. They’ve already gained huge support from the likes of Maceo Plex, Edu Imbernon, Nick Curly, Huxley, Anthea & Celler, Russ Yallop, M’In, Leon and many more, with plenty to come in the near future. Their lastest EP is badboy. Its called – Frequency of Life and you can listen or buy it here…

James Ford and Jas Shaw. Two men. Three letters. SMD. Electronic pioneers. DJs. Producers. They’ve been tearing up dance-floors around the world for the past few years & were proud to have them making their FACE courtyard debut on Sat 12th May.

Especially in the wake of their new album – ‘Unpatterns’ which is gaining rave reviews and is due for release on the 14th May 2012. It’s a record full of love, dedication, hard-earned experience, obvious understanding of decades of electronic music from across scenes and styles, and huge fun. It’s completely of the now, showing a band as familiar with Blawan and Lone as they are with Silver Apples and Phuture, but never jumping on bandwagons. Well worth a space on your pod.

For this Spring time Birmingham Showcase Festival blow-out on April 28th, the nearby street will be closed, the whole of the sprawling Rainbow Complex will be take over – all 6 arenas – and there will be live Art Galleries, food stalls, street performers and chill out spaces… basically a full on festival sized bonanza right in the centre of the city with sounds coming from DJs including Sub Focus, Plastician, Alex Arnout, Cera Alba, Mele and Art Department of No 19 Records who we sat down with ahead of the event. Get tickets here then read on…

For starters, why don’t you tell us how you got your start in the world of dance music?

Johnny White: For me, it was at a club called Industry nightclub in Toronto. Kenny was a resident DJ there back then in the late 90′s– he was actually my one of my favorite DJs back then, but that was my first kinda introduction to proper underground dance music.

What’s it like working together after both becoming respected figures in the scene, individually?

JW: It’s great; it’s very different obviously than working on your own. There’s another person and another person’s ideas and perspective to consider at all times. But we’ve been friends for years, lived together, worked together on a different level, putting out his music on my record label, No. 19 Music, and DJing together for years together in Toronto. It’s a fun collaboration. I really respect him as an artist too, and vice versa, so you always come up with something interesting.

How would you describe your sound?

JW: I think it’s mostly house and there’s something new to it. But it’s a twist on what we’ve both been listening to our whole lives — [Kenny] about 20 years in the business and me about 15 or so. We take cues from all the people we’ve loved and listened to all these years and it’s just a collaboration that speaks to where we’re both at right now, mentally and musically.

What inspires your overall musical aesthetic? As in, what kinds of media, be it music, film, literature, art…?

JW: I’m a lover of art, not just music, right… But it doesn’t just always come from electronic music, obviously. It’s not even what I listen to often when I’m relaxing. But a lot of where we grew up and what we’ve been through and your relationships with people affect it more than anything. The city that we live in, your habitat, your family, your friends and the people you surround yourself with: I think those are the biggest influences more than anything.

What’s it like being a part of the Crosstown Rebels family?

K.G: It’s great. It’s something I was a fan of for a while before I started working with everybody on the label. I mean, Damian [Lazarus] I’ve known for years. I’ve known Jamie [Jones], I’ve known a lot of the guys for a long time and it’s like… Actually, I can’t even really put it into words how much it means to me, and I’m sure I speak for Kenny, too. To be working at this level with all these guys that we love and respect and they’ve actually become some of our best friends, ya know?

And to be able to work with labels like Hot Creations? Get Physical? And artists like Jamie Jones– who’s an absolute inspiration; Lee Foss, Soul Clap… I can’t even imagine.

JW: Yeah Jamie’s great., pure class. Lee & the Soul Clap guys are a lot of fun. I mean we have a ton in common, like as far as vibe and taste in music. Being the same age and all of us having grown up in North America, we have a lot in common right off the bat and they’ve become some of my best friends as well.

What’s coming up for Art Department in 2012?

JW: Live show. That’s what we’re working on right now.

Are you looking forward to the Birmingham Showcase Festival?

JW: Of course, Birmingham has some great line ups, to be playing there on a different kind of line up, with the likes of Sub Focus, who will be amazing of course. Its a great venue too so all in all it should make a for a great show.

Anything else in the pipeline?

KG: We have been working on an album with Deniz Kurtel, so look out for that in the near future. But for now we are getting ready for the live show which will be showcasing this year.

This is reflected at Showcase Festival as they have the much hyped Mele and Hackman headlining The Rainbow Garden with support from Shadow City co-founder Jordan a.Lott plus Kincker Bocker Corey and Skankboy.

Jinx is a d&b star who will playing a set in the warehouse during the Birmingham Showcase Festival on April 28th alongside the Seedy Sonics residents and in support of Sub Focus and Plastician. As such we thought we’d introduce you to him ahead of the event.

Jinx has been in this game a long time. The 31 year old Birmingham player has been compelled by the underground scene since his early teens when he began to help arrange the now-infamously revered ‘parties for artys’ including Lifted and Urban Disturbance in and around the Midlands. Playing all over the world at well-established clubs and festivals like Glastonbury, Babylon Dread, Big Chill and more since 1996, he is also part of the Lionfire jungle collective and has been since 2008.

While working with Lionfire, Jinx has remixed and worked with both up and coming and established local artists, including Birmingham reggae band Friendly Fire (rapidly becoming one of the most successful reggae backing bands in the UK) and associated vocalists working along side such artists as Peter Spence, Ras Tweed and hotly tipped vocalist Eva Lazarus of Bristol based act Dub Mafia.

With records signed to heavyweight label Dread Recordings, Jinx comes with big sounding musical remedies that bounce between laid back rollin’ beats, jungle smashers blended with the broad reggae, hip hop and soul music flavours. The man has a high rate of release and labels like Pure Vibez, Criminal and Soul Deep are all close associates of his. What’s more, d&b legend Ray Keith has asked Jinx to do a solo LP and EP for his label – it’s due to drop this year and will feature vocalists CoMa , Shyna , Amsterdam soul singer Ruth and the mighty i-Mitri.

In case you didn’t somehow know, we, Face, are proud to be reppin’ at the upcoming Birmingham Showcase Festival on Saturday April 28th. As well as plenty of urban and drum & bass offerings from other top local promotions, we will be doing our usual underground house and tech thing, with Art Department, Alex Arnout and Cera Alba.

The big beats bonanza will take place in all The Rainbow’s different nooks and crannies, and will even spread out on to the street as it did last year. The Cellar, Courtyard and more will all be transformed into one big party paradise. Get your tickets here then read on to learn more about our three headliners…

Art Department
facebook.com/artdepartmentmusic

Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner – Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, revolutionary underground producers out of North America. Their EPs, remixes and full lengths on labels like their own as well as Crosstown Rebels has defined a whole new Goth house sound in recent years so Face are lucky to have them.

Alex Arnout
residentadvisor.net/dj/alexarnout

Dogmatik boss (the label which launched Maja Jane Coles) Alex Arnout is a slow burning star with over 20 years experience behind him. Having started his DJ career in Spain, and in the humble surroundings of many a local bar, the nineties were spent learning the basic skills so often lacking in today’s break-through ‘DJs’. Eventually catching the ear of someone that mattered, Arnout began playing more familiar outposts like DC: 10 and Pin Up in Ibiza, Dance Valley in Amsterdam and Circo Loco in London, for whom he has been resident for the last few years.

facebook.com/pages/Cera-Alba/133762628

One of the most recent additions to the ubiquitous Hot Creations crew is Cere Alba. His warm, disco flecked, 80s influenced and creamy house sounds are (we think) perfect for getting you dancing.

Down in the Cellar at FACE ME (Tom Shorterz) and a host of friends and guests have been supplying a sound track of House & Bass music every Saturday for almost 2 years. For the summer of 2012 we are glad to announce a new resident DJ ‘Hannah Wants’. I caught up with her for a interview……

Hannah Wants 60 Second interview

1.	What was the first record (or CD) you ever bought?

I don’t have the best memory BUT a couple of the first ever vinyl records that I bought were ‘Loverush – Same Ol’ Thing’ and ‘Lee Cabrera – Shake It’ when I first started DJ’ing back in 2002 (ish).

2. You have been DJing for quite some time but it was not until you did a season in ibiza you really started making some BIG moves, tell us a little about your ibiza experience and what you got up to?

I’d always wanted to do the season in Ibiza as it is without doubt the best place in the world for house music sooooo I just up and left in 2010. Was the best thing I ever did I suppose in terms of my ‘career’. It was out there that I was given some amazing opportunities, started getting noticed and when I got back to the UK after four months on the White Isle, everything just started to happen and it’s been an amazing, upward journey ever since.

3.	Your DJ schedule is crazy, you travel most weekends all over the UK doing gig after gig, how do you cope with such a busy workload every weekend?

I love my ‘job’ so that definitely helps. Other than that, I am extra ‘OCD’ organised with my sets and always make sure Sunday is a ‘chiller’ day to rest and reload after a hectic weekend.

4.	Has been a female DJ made things easier or harder for you?

I’d have to say a bit of both. I’ve had the usual ‘girls can’t DJ’ sexism/criticism over the years but then it has also worked in my favour as people generally double-take when they see a female behind the decks and so making a ‘name’ for myself has probably been a little easier.

5.	Your one of my residents at 02:31 after-party and your mixtape you did for me has hit over 10,000 plays, why do you think people buzz off your sets so much?

Ermmmm… This might sound kind of gay but I like to think each of my mixes go on almost a ‘journey’. I don’t just mix any one sub-genre of house music. I like to mix it up, keep it fresh and different, play across the board and drop banger after banger.
I LOVE the fact so many people listen to, play, share and comment on my mixes. The complimentary messages I receive for putting the mixes out are amazing. I appreciate every single one and it makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s good to know you’re helping people get in the mood for a night out or keeping the party going etc.

6.	Your productions have been getting some huge support, do you have anything in the pipe line we should keep our eyes and ears open for?

Karin Park is an amazing, unique vocalist and through the recommendation of Dave Spoon, I was lucky enough to remix one of her tracks, which has been accepted by her label. The girl is going to blow up (not literally) and other future remixers of her tracks are Eats Everything and Maya Jane Coles to name a few so to be chosen and accepted as an official remixer has been massive.
I’ve also got one of the most amazing female vocalists I’ve ever heard to write and record me an original acapella to work with which is really exciting. I can’t announce who it is just yet, but she has had plays on radio 1 and is an unreal talent!
Some of my more recent stuff has also been getting support from big players such as Eats Everything, Chris James, Foamo, Andi Durrant, DJ Q etc and so that has also been really positive.

7.	Hannah Wants? what is it you actually want?

Errrrr…… a lot! Music wise though I want to keep living the dream and keep getting bigger and better at what I do.

This mix features 20 house & bass tracks from big producers such as French Fries, Lorenzo, Dusky, Joe Goddard, Gorgon City, Mosca, plus loads more.
(also includes my latest track “Oochie Bang Bang”)

This Saturday April 21st we welcome Huxley to our party. Releasing on Hypercolour, 2020Vision and his own Saints & Sonnets, the Londoner has been on fire in 2012 blending garage references with his own bass and house templates. He recently mixed it up for Fact Mag (listen here) so we caught up with him for a brief chat…

How has your year been so far?

Pretty damn great. I couldn’t really ask for a better start to 2012. Great support on my latest singles and played some great gigs already, with obviously a lot more to come. If the rest of the year carries on like this, it’ll be amazing!

Have your tastes evolved much recently? You playing anything new?

i would say my tastes might have actually gone back around a bit, rather than breaking into anything new. i’m harking back to a lot of garagey sounding stuff. Things like Disclosure, Gavin Herlihy’s track on leftroom and a few other bits too. I think it’s coming through in my music a bit as well. It’s nice to sometimes show where you’ve come from. After all not everyone came from listening to loads of old school house, exclusively.

What was the last record you bought? Why did you buy it?

erm, the last vinyl i bought was the anthony shake shakir 6 tracker on Wild Oats. I bought it because i liked it, i suppose? I’ve been a fan of his since i discovered him after his stuff started to be rereleased on rush hour a while back.

Did you go Miami? How was it? Do you do any actual conferencing?

Unfortunately i didn’t make it out there. Next year though. Definitely next year

When you’ve had a massive hit like Let It Go – does it affect how you are next time your write?

well, it actually took almost a year for Let It Go to come out. I made it in may last year, and have been playing it from around the same time. So i guess i’m kind of over it and have already made a lot more since i did it. There is a bit more pressure i suppose, but my next couple of releases have been planned for a while anyway. My 2020 came out on monday and my next one with sam russo on leftroom is out soon as well.

Can you write whenever/where ever or do you need to get in the zone first?

Bit of both really. i go through stages more than anything really. Sometimes i can sit down every day for about 4 months and make something or start something every time. But, sometimes i can hit a patch where i start about 5 things a day and hate all of them. it just depends really.

What should people expect at Face?

A bit of a mixture of house, garagey stuff, deeper stuff, some good basslines and hopefully a lot of great music.

Who has your favourite Face?

I’d have to say Jack Nicholson. Just watch the Shining or Batman, need i say more.

What else you got coming up?

Well, like i said my 2020vision release just came out on vinyl. I think the digital is out soon too. Pretty excited to see how that does. Following on from that I have eps on leftroom, tsuba, local action and working on my follow up for Hypercolour for later in the year. As always i have a load of remixes, most notably ones for Professor Green and Maya Jane Coles. Also i’m in the process of putting together my first official compilation for the 1trax series. the first two were done by Matt Tolfrey and Subb-an. So i’m in pretty good company!

What do you like to do day to day outside music?

Just your general stuff, i suppose. I like to eat out, see my mates and I watch a hell of a lot of (crap) movies. I’m actually watching one now called Fired Up. if you like shit american teen comedies i recommend it. Also lately i’ve just moved in with a few mates. They’ve basically been ribbing me for not being able to boil an egg, so i’ve been trying to up my cooking game. Although i’m still pretty much just at the cook meat, add sauce stage.

This week the Face collective pair up with Wobble Last Dance and invite house legends X-Press 2 to play with Phil Gifford and Friends.

Such is their swashbuckling sense of adventure; it’s hard to believe that X-Press 2 have been at the vanguard of British electronic music for two decades now. Having crafted seminal hits like ‘Lazy’ and ‘Muzik Express’ in their early days, the duo are now found remixing and producing for labels like Suara and Skint on a regular basis. Having such a set of legends play as these is special indeed!

Through the dark stormy sea’s a creature appears…

The ship is rocking back and forth as something grabs hold of the main mast and pulls Ye Tashio Ship and crew down, down through the depths of the wild sea’s…

Join us through a portal into The MUSTACHIO! World. What explorations await as we sink into the subterranean sea’s. We anticipate some unusual visual sights, musical delights, creatures from the deepest waters, and who knows what else lies below!

.

As an avid clubber determined to squeeze every last drop of the rave out of each weekend, Neil Parkes regularly covered the length and width of the country visiting various House nights and numerous after-parties. Starting on a Friday and rarely finishing before a Sunday evening, it was during these prolonged weekends that Parkes passion for music developed, eventually leading him to pursue his dream and purchase his first set of decks.

However, it wasn’t until an unexpected visit to Ibiza, and the subsequent four months of manic Mondays spent at DC10 and Cocoon, that Neil musical direction took a turn. Inspired by the Deep tech sound synonymous with Balearic terrace parties, his love of electronic music started to blossom and develop into the familiar sound he is recognised for today. Ensuing summers spent on the white isle followed but it wasn’t until returning to the UK in 2004 that his career behind the decks really started to gather pace.

Landing his first gig for Abattoir at Manchester’s Sankey’s Soap, Neil quickly made a name for himself. As well as showcasing his undeniable talent, his gigs have enabled him to rub shoulders with some of the very DJs who’d inspired him all those years ago in Ibiza. Jamie Jones, Clive Henry, Damian Lazarus, Matthias Tanzmann, Matt Tolfrey, Richy Ahmed, Subb-An, Tiefschwarz and Timo Mass, make up just some of the names he’s now had the pleasure to play alongside.

Look out for Neils first EP which will be out this summer…

SEE YOU ON SATURDAY 24TH MARCH 2012!!!!
