Tom

Down in the Cellar at FACE  ME (Tom Shorterz) and a host of friends and guests have been supplying a sound track of House & Bass music every Saturday for almost 2 years. For the summer of 2012 we are glad to announce a new resident DJ ‘Hannah Wants’. I caught up with her for a interview……

Hannah Wants 60 Second interview

1. What was the first record (or CD) you ever bought?

I don’t have the best memory BUT a couple of the first ever vinyl records that I bought were ‘Loverush – Same Ol’ Thing’ and ‘Lee Cabrera – Shake It’ when I first started DJ’ing back in 2002 (ish).

2. You have been DJing for quite some time but it was not until you did a season in ibiza you really started making some BIG moves, tell us a little about your ibiza experience and what you got up to?

I’d always wanted to do the season in Ibiza as it is without doubt the best place in the world for house music sooooo I just up and left in 2010. Was the best thing I ever did I suppose in terms of my ‘career’. It was out there that I was given some amazing opportunities, started getting noticed and when I got back to the UK after four months on the White Isle, everything just started to happen and it’s been an amazing, upward journey ever since.

3. Your DJ schedule is crazy, you travel most weekends all over the UK doing gig after gig, how do you cope with such a busy workload every weekend?

I love my ‘job’ so that definitely helps. Other than that, I am extra ‘OCD’ organised with my sets and always make sure Sunday is a ‘chiller’ day to rest and reload after a hectic weekend.

4. Has been a female DJ made things easier or harder for you?

I’d have to say a bit of both. I’ve had the usual ‘girls can’t DJ’ sexism/criticism over the years but then it has also worked in my favour as people generally double-take when they see a female behind the decks and so making a ‘name’ for myself has probably been a little easier.

5. Your one of my residents at 02:31 after-party and your mixtape you did for me has hit over 10,000 plays, why do you think people buzz off your sets so much?

Ermmmm… This might sound kind of gay but I like to think each of my mixes go on almost a ‘journey’. I don’t just mix any one sub-genre of house music. I like to mix it up, keep it fresh and different, play across the board and drop banger after banger.
I LOVE the fact so many people listen to, play, share and comment on my mixes. The complimentary messages I receive for putting the mixes out are amazing. I appreciate every single one and it makes all the hard work worthwhile. It’s good to know you’re helping people get in the mood for a night out or keeping the party going etc.

6. Your productions have been getting some huge support, do you have anything in the pipe line we should keep our eyes and ears open for?

Karin Park is an amazing, unique vocalist and through the recommendation of Dave Spoon, I was lucky enough to remix one of her tracks, which has been accepted by her label. The girl is going to blow up (not literally) and other future remixers of her tracks are Eats Everything and Maya Jane Coles to name a few so to be chosen and accepted as an official remixer has been massive.
I’ve also got one of the most amazing female vocalists I’ve ever heard to write and record me an original acapella to work with which is really exciting. I can’t announce who it is just yet, but she has had plays on radio 1 and is an unreal talent!
Some of my more recent stuff has also been getting support from big players such as Eats Everything, Chris James, Foamo, Andi Durrant, DJ Q etc and so that has also been really positive.

7. Hannah Wants? what is it you actually want?

Errrrr…… a lot! Music wise though I want to keep living the dream and keep getting bigger and better at what I do.

This mix features 20 house & bass tracks from big producers such as French Fries, Lorenzo, Dusky, Joe Goddard, Gorgon City, Mosca, plus loads more.
(also includes my latest track “Oochie Bang Bang”)

Cellar vibes is becoming a bewildering experience every Saturday. While the courtyard is the ‘Cherry’ on the cake ,we supply the unprecedented ingredients of Bass, Bass & Bass from many genres of music but as long as it rumbles the dancefloor …… We play it !!!

This week we introduce our NEW resident DJ’s joining us deep under the Rainbow pub, Cause & Effect. Inland knights have 2 of there tracks in this months top ten, a top 10 on Stompy.com, Sonny Foderas digging them and they are general all round Birmingham rudeboys!

30 second interview go go go !!!

Q1. Hello Cause & Effect, which 1 of you is ‘Cause’ and which one is ‘Effect’ or you not going down like that?

A. Haha if we had to choose chris is the cause and kane is the effect

Q2. What would you say the main influence of your musical productions are?

A. Earlier influences come from uk garage background, mj cole, wideboys, sticky, todd edwards, we could go on and on, these days, we try not to look toward other producers for inspiration as we are trying to craft a unique sound which we can call our own, but along the way we might have borrowed ideas from afrojack, sonny fodera, dj zinc, sweedish house mafia, and any producer who can knock up a good groove

Q3. There was a name change from Groove Box to Cause & Effect was this due to Tax invasion or is there actually a reason behind this?

A.  Well the reasons for the name change are because there are a few grooveboxes already circulating around the world, we wouldnt want to be seen to take credit for someone else’s work so the name change was necessary

Q4. Last time you played in Cellar its safe to say you totally SMASHED the life out of it , what do we have in store for this weeks set?

A. This week you can expect a fusion of funky n filth in no particular order, weve got loads of new goodies to test out too so i can say were really up for it after the last time we performed here

Q5. If you could have 1 superpower for a day what would it be and what would you do with it for those 24 hours?

A. If i had a superpower for one day id have the power to fly, id just spend the day flying all over the world sightseeing, or id have the power to teleport alcohol from behind the bar in to my cup all night and get super drunk

Q6. Do you have any NEW releases worth looking out for?

A. We have just had a release out on beatdown records called flyaway and were currently in the top 10 on stompy with that, also you can purchase gurning available on baboon tunes on beatport.

The Moon Can’t compete with your beams

It was DC10 in 2007 when I  first heard this enchanted like vocal bellowing from the speakers. Its now 2011 and this track still gives me that same feeling it did back then. Think Acid , think Roland 303 , think Larry Heard! Sure to be a timeless classic?

Home Grown Produce

Saturday only comes once a week but when it does FACE likes to dust down its underground basement which we call the Cellar and play host to those alternative bass vibes which cause havok on the floor !! With L.E.D lighting , function 1 sound system and 2 rundown chesterfields for those more sociable sit down [...]
